Best viewpoints in London

The Parliament Hill Viewpoint in London, England, is one of the most well-known and popular viewpoints in the city, located in the heart of Hampstead Heath, a vast, approximately 320-hectare park in North London. This hill, reaching a height of about 98 meters above sea level, offers a spectacular panoramic view of the skyline of the British capital and is a cherished destination for locals and visitors who want to experience the beauty of the city from a unique perspective. The viewpoint combines the wild, natural atmosphere of the Heath with an unparalleled view of London's landmarks, making it a place that harmoniously unites history, nature, and urban splendor.

Activities in Hampstead Heath

Parliament Hill likely got its name from the time of the English Civil War in the 17th century, when troops supporting Parliament camped here to defend the city – a theory that is not definitively proven, but gives the place a historical aura. The hill itself is part of Hampstead Heath, which has been used as public land for centuries and was preserved in the 19th century due to local resistance against development plans. Today, the area is managed by the City of London Corporation and remains a protected retreat amidst the expanding metropolis.

Natural spots in London

From the top of the Parliament Hill Viewpoint, there is a breathtaking view of London. On clear days, iconic buildings such as St. Paul's Cathedral, the Shard, the Gherkin, the London Eye, and the Houses of Parliament are clearly visible, while the horizon stretches from the hills of Crystal Palace in the south to the Epping Forests in the northeast. An orientation board helps visitors identify the landmarks, making the viewpoint an ideal place to understand the geography of the city. The view is particularly impressive at sunrise or sunset, when the city is bathed in golden or pink light, or at night, when the lights of London appear like a sparkling sea.

Historical attractions in London

The journey to the viewpoint is part of the experience. Several paths lead up the hill from the Heath, ranging from gentle inclines to steeper routes through heather, grasslands, and ancient trees. The ascent is relatively short but rewarding, and along the way, you often encounter walkers, joggers, or families enjoying the fresh air. The hill itself is an open grassy area with some benches inviting you to linger, offering plenty of space to enjoy the view in peace or simply relax on the grass. The atmosphere is relaxed and laid-back, with people having picnics, flying kites, or photographing the skyline.

Picnic areas in Hampstead Heath

The nature surrounding Parliament Hill is an essential part of its charm. Hampstead Heath is known for its wild beauty, with gentle hills, ponds like the nearby Hampstead Ponds, and dense forests providing surprising seclusion amidst the city. The wildlife is diverse: squirrels dart through the trees, birds like crows, blackbirds, and occasionally falcons can be spotted, and in spring, wildflowers like daisies and buttercups bloom on the meadows. The Heath is a protected area, also recognized as a Site of Special Scientific Interest, highlighting its ecological importance.

For activities, the viewpoint and its surroundings offer numerous possibilities. The hill is a popular starting point for longer hikes through the Heath, such as to Kenwood House, another historic estate, or to the swimming ponds that offer refreshing swimming opportunities in the summer. The open space is perfect for kite flying, especially on windy days, and the meadows are a hotspot for picnics or informal games like frisbee. In winter, the hill turns into a sledding slope when covered in snow, particularly popular with children. The proximity to Hampstead Village with its charming cafes and pubs completes the visit.

Parliament Hill is an experience year-round: in spring, blooming trees and clear views entice, in summer, the long days and lively atmosphere, in autumn, the colorful leaves, and in winter, the clear, cool air that makes the city stand out even sharper. The viewpoint is accessible to all, as some paths gently slope and are suitable for wheelchairs or strollers, although steeper paths and grassy terrain may pose challenges. Dogs are welcome and enjoy the freedom of the open space, as long as they are kept under control.

On a clear day, it's one of the best places to get a good view of the London skyline. Came here for a picnic lunch with a group of friends! If you do plan to come here for a picnic. Just make sure that you have a waterproof picnic blanket. It had rained a few days prior and the ground is still quite wet. Really nice place to see cute dogs, play frisbee or just a fun game of cards while taking in the view.

Strange that they let a View point be obstructed by essentially worthless schrubs and trees!

Went on a typical grey february day, so while i avoided any tourists, it was muddy and grey. I wouldn’t recommend going specifically for the view (when it’s not sunny anyhow), but if you want a scenic walk around the heath in one of few city green spaces, then you should definitely pass by.

Depends on weather obviously but walking up the hill through trees then suddenly coming out where it opened up and could see right over London was pretty cool.
